Focused on building a rock-solid foundation, Defensive Rifle is designed to refine your proficiency with the rifle through a curriculum centered on mechanical excellence and accuracy. This course bridges the gap between basic operation and confident, reliable performance, ensuring every student leaves with a deep understanding of their platform.

The training begins with a comprehensive review of fundamental mechanics, including efficient presentations and smooth reloads. Students will spend significant time mastering stability and precision from various shooting positions, ensuring a high level of accuracy at distance. As the course progresses, the drills increase in complexity to challenge your target transitions and consistency under time standards.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of Operational Training Co. Fundamentals: Successful completion of our foundational course ensures you have the necessary mechanical skills to excel in this curriculum.
  • Proof of Equivalent Training: We welcome students who have completed comparable training from a recognized institution or professional organization. Please be prepared to provide a certificate or training record for verification.

Required gear

  • Rifle & Sling: A reliable semi-automatic rifle (e.g., AR-15, AK-47) equipped with a high-quality sling. Two-point slings are highly recommended for stability and transitions.
  • Optics or Iron Sights: Properly zeroed sights. Students should be prepared for precision shooting at the 100-yard line.
  • Magazines: At least 3-5 reliable magazines.
  • Magazine Pouches: A way to carry at least two spare magazines on a belt or chest rig to facilitate efficient reloads.
  • Eye & Ear Protection: Ballistic-rated eye protection and electronic ear protection are preferred to ensure range commands are clearly heard.
  • Appropriate Footwear: Rugged, closed-toe shoes or boots suitable for varied range terrain.

Range essentials

  • Maintenance Kit: Basic tools for your specific platform, including lubricant and a cleaning kit to address any malfunctions or field maintenance.
  • Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Dress in layers and according to the forecast. Range activities will continue in most weather conditions.
  • Hydration & Nutrition: Bring enough water and snacks/lunch to sustain high energy levels throughout the training day.
  • Sun & Element Protection: Sunscreen, lip balm, and a hat with a brim are recommended for comfort during outdoor sessions.

Highly recommended

  • Kneeling/Prone Gear: Since a significant portion of the course involves kneeling and prone positions, knee pads can provide added comfort and stability.
  • Note-Taking Materials: A small notebook and pen to record zeroing data and key instructional insights.
